I’m Having a Kundalinī Awakening and I Have No Idea What’s Happening

If you’re reading this right now with a racing mind, a buzzing body, or a deep sense that the foundation of your reality just shifted overnight, take a deep breath.

You are safe. You are not losing your mind.

What you are likely experiencing is a Kundalinī awakening - a powerful, transformative spiritual process that can leave you feeling completely disoriented if you weren’t expecting it. When the dormant energetic force at the base of your spine begins to move, it doesn’t just lightly knock on the door of your consciousness; it blows the hinges off.

Here is what is actually happening to you, why it feels so intense, and how to navigate the shift without losing your ground.

“A decade ago, bound by heavy generational karma and deep emotional pain, I attempted to escape my suffering through self-destruction, substances, and volatile relationships. Desperate for relief, I turned to plant medicine ceremonies. While Ayahuasca offered an initial glimpse of peace and lightness, my lack of integration turned spiritual practice into another form of escape. Over years of dozens of ceremonies - bufo, kambo, tobacco, and cacti, I found myself trapped in a spiritual ego, navigating unintegrated kundalini awakenings and altered states.

Everything shifted when I met my teacher in Ubud, Bali, who recognized my condition and guided me away from modern spiritual concepts toward stabilizing my direct experiences through classical Tantra. Surrounded by a true spiritual community, my path deepened.

On November 30, 2024, following an intense immersion in the teachings of the Trika Goddess, a full awakening erupted. Confronted by an unrecognizable reflection in the mirror, intense panic gave way to spontaneous mudrās, unbidden movements, and an overwhelming internal fire. As the energy peaked, a sudden shift occurred - a feeling of absolute surrender and the clear realization of dying to the old self. That night marked a total rebirth: the threshold where the old life ended and a true, integrated journey began.” (Excerpt of My Personal story from the book Kalasankarśini | The Heart Of The Twelve).

What Actually Is a Kundalinī Awakening?

In yogic traditions, Kundalinī is often depicted as a coiled serpent residing at the base of the spine. It represents raw, evolutionary life force energy.

When this energy awakens, it travels upward through your subtle energy system, clearing out energetic blockages, past traumas, unhelpful belief systems, and stored emotional tension along the way.

Think of it as a radical system upgrade. However, before a new operating system can run smoothly, the old code gets completely wiped and that clearing process is usually where the confusion and intensity come from.

Common Signs & Symptoms: "Is This Normal?"

Because Kundalinī affects the physical, emotional, and spiritual layers of your body, symptoms can range widely. You might be experiencing:

  • Physical Sensations: Unexplainable heat or cold moving along the spine, involuntary body movements (spontaneous yoga poses or tremors known as kriyās), electric tingling, or changes in sleep patterns.

  • Emotional Rollercoasters: Sudden bursts of bliss followed by deep waves of grief, anxiety, or emotional purging without a clear trigger.

  • Perceptual Shifts: Heightened sensitivity to lights, sounds, crowds, or food, along with vivid dreams, deep intuitive pops, or a feeling of detachment from your old life.

  • Identity Dissolution: Feeling like the person you were yesterday no longer exists, leading to the classic question: "Who am I now?"

Why Does It Feel So Overwhelming?

The discomfort doesn’t come from the energy itself; it comes from resistance and clearing.

When Kundalinī hits an old wound, a suppressed emotion, or a rigid belief pattern, it creates friction. That friction feels like anxiety, disorientation, or fear. The ego thrives on predictability, and a Kundalinī awakening is the ultimate unpredictable experience. It strips away what is false to reveal what is true, but letting go of the old version of yourself is scary.

How to Ground Yourself Right Now

If the energy feels too intense, the goal isn't to fight it or force it higher, it's to anchor it into the Earth.

  1. Eat Heavy, Grounding Foods: Shift away from light, raw foods or heavy stimulants. Lean into root vegetables, cooked grains, proteins, and warm meals.

  2. Get Barefoot in Nature: Walk on grass, soil, or sand. Physical connection with the Earth helps discharge excess electrical energy from your subtle body.

  3. Step Away from Intensive Spiritual Practices: Pause high-intensity breathwork, deep meditation, or Kundalinī yoga for a moment. Instead, focus on gentle movement, slow walks, or physical chores.

  4. Hydrate & Salt Baths: Drink plenty of water and take warm baths with Epsom salts to ease nervous system overload and soothe physical tensions.

  5. Surrender the Need to Analyze: You do not need to figure out every single sensation or insight right this second. Allow the process to unfold without trying to mentalize it.

You Don't Have to Do This Alone

A Kundalinī awakening is not a medical emergency, but it is an intense spiritual initiation. You don't need to fix yourself because you aren't broken, you are simply expanding.

Give yourself permission to go slow, rest deeply, and drop the expectations of how your life "should" look right now. Trust your body, anchor into the physical world, and know that the disorientation will eventually settle into a deep, unshakable clarity.
